Abstract
The article tells the story of the museum from foundation to present time. The museum in Kabul is already the second museum of world importance to have suffered great damage in recent military confl icts. Founded in 1919, the world-famous museum entered its period of trial in 1978, the year of the military coup (the socalled April revolution). The civil war was a diffi cult time for the museum, yet the catastrophe began in 1992, starting from when the building was for several years on the fi ring line of two armies. Shelling, fi res and robberies wrought great damage. Initially the takeover by the Taliban brought some stability, but the campaign against idol worship started by Mullah Omar in 1999 led to the destruction of the statues of the Buddha at Bamiyan, whereas in the museum itself thousands of sculptured items were smashed. The 2001 victory over the Taliban denoted the start of a certain renaissance for the museum, yet the wounds it had suffered can never be healed.
