Abstract
This article deals with the problem of how eastern-Slavic writers, such as Hryhory KvitkaOsnovyanenko, or Wincenty Dunin-Marcinkiewicz, were turning from the dominant language, be it Russian or Polish, to writing in their national language, Ukrainian, or Belorussian. It is stressed, that the genre and thematic of their works were connected with the language of their potential readership.
