Abstract

The author considers the mechanism of constructing Christian Jewish self-identification in modern Russia. Drawing on her own field materials (in-depth interviews collected in several Russian cities), novels and stories by modern Russian writers and web-resources, Elena E. Nosenko-Stein demonstrates the variability of Jewish self-identification in today's Russia and its detachment from Judaism. This phenomenon is the result of the Soviet antireligious politics, destruction of the traditional Jewish culture in the Holocaust and - most of all - voluntary assimilation of Jews en masse. The author also points out that in spite of hostile attitudes of many Jews and Gentiles towards baptized Jews, the specific Christian (Russian Orthodox) Jewish self-identification in modern Russia is more popular than traditional Jewish self-identification based on Judaism.
