Abstract
The article ventures into an exploration of the origins and functioning of the stereotypical notion of "Finnish honesty" that emerged in the conceptions and projections of Russian scholarship of the second half of the nineteenth century. The author analyzes an array of texts pertaining to the popular scholarship genre, including ethnographic descriptions and anthropological essays, but purposefully sets aside the question of the image of Finns in fiction writing. By tracing discourse trends and reconstructing various meanings attached to the notion of "honesty", she draws a complex outline of this unique cultural issue.
