Abstract
After Kyrgyzstan became independent in the 1990s, there began a complicated search for its own way and own independent identity in the country. It were the ethnic and religious components that became most prominent in that process. The active spreading of Islam started together with the revival of old traditions and generated what would be one of the tension and conflict zones. The question that currently draws arguments and discussions is what kind of Islam should be practiced in the country. Mullahs consider themselves the principal experts in this question. It is the moldolor phenomenon that the article seeks to describe and examine. The work is based on over 100 interviews with Islam practitioners, which were conducted in the Talas region of Kyrgyzstan. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed.
