- Abstract
- The article touches on the understudied topic of Orthodox monastic women elders in Russia, a very interesting phenomenon in the Russian life of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The author shows that the phenomenon was connected with asceticism in women's communities and monasteries and had to do in general with the religious renaissance that Orthodox female monasticism in Russia had been experiencing at the time.
