Abstract
Relationships between the Russian and Chinese settlers after the annexation of Eastern Manchuria (Ussuri Area) by the Russian Empire were uneasy and complex; there were both cooperation and rivalry. Historians studying this issue usually focus on factors related to politics and business. This is a valid approach; yet it fails to explain the fact of certain distrust experienced for over a century by Russians of the Far East toward the Chinese; in opposition, for instance, to the Koreans, for the attitude toward the latter was more tolerant.
