Abstract
The article is based on field data collected among Old Believers in the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The paper deals with current vernacular beliefs related to the preparation for childbirth, pregnancy, delivery and postpartum ritual cleansing of the new mother and child. The author analyzes how numerous prohibitions and prescriptions regulating the behavior of the participants of birth rite function in culture and interact, how traditional models of behavior influence current practices of giving birth in the communities of Old Believers.
