Abstract
The results of the Georgian national census conducted in 2014 allow us to look at the country’s demographic realities from a new perspective. The article analyses the demographic changes, including such aspects as age structure and marital status, that have taken place as well as demonstrates inaccuracies of the previous censuses. The article further discusses the ethnic structure of Georgia and ethnic-demographic processes unfolding in various regions; the decrease in the overall population is discussed. While every major ethnic group within Georgia witnessed population decrease, the relative number of Georgians vis-à-vis the others has increased. The Azeri population has decreased only slightly while at the same time the number of Armenians in the country has registered a significant drop. As for Russians, Ossetians, Greeks, and Jews, their numbers have plummeted.
