Abstract
The question is considered why constructions of type * are anomalous. The book was written by Ivan. It is shown that a perfect form would have here a perfect meaning 'for the speaker it is important what result of the action takes place at the moment of speech (or other reference moment)'. The perfect meaning can appear in two varieties: “standard”, of the form “there is a book at the moment of speech”, and subject-oriented, “in connection with the action at the moment of speech, the individuality of the subject is important”, and for constructions of the type under consideration, the latter is much more likely. A passive by its nature requires that with the help of a corresponding “subjectless” sentence (like the Book was being written) it is possible to name the same situation as with the help of a sentence where the subject is explicit (the Book was written by Ivan). If perfection is subject-oriented, then, omitting the subject, it is impossible to name the same situation. As a result, a conflict arises between the nature of the passive voice and the characteristics of the perfect perfect species, which is responsible for the anomaly.
