Abstract
The article considers history and contemporary level of development of crafts sector. On the example of the leading European countries the author shows that handicrafts are not a survival from the Middle Ages, but an accelerating type of small manufacturing entrepreneurship. Modern arts and crafts combine ancient traditions and state-of-the-art technologies, which allow creating unique production. Nowadays there are forecasts saying that a phenomenon called "the new artisan economy" will arise in the near future. Timely understanding and using this trend is extremely important for Russia, the country with unique culture, centuries-long artisan traditions, and wishing to build an innovative economy.
