- Abstract
- The author explores the issue of ethnonymy which had long been a classic object of ethnographic studies, especially in the tradition of Soviet ethnography. The complex nature of the issue, as the author argues, was in some serious ways misrepresented due to certain assumptions dictated in the past by so called eth-nos theory. Drawing on a case study analyzing the Eveny of the Magadan Region, she attempts to demonstrate both new ways and new sources of researching the issue that help uncover the specificity of the process of ethnic naming.
