Abstract
The article examines the Chukchi tradition of exchanging wives. Based on the analysis of sources and literature related to the XVIII - first half of the XX century, an attempt is made to determine the anthropological basis of this phenomenon. Having revised the prevailing view in Soviet sibirvedenii on “partnership by wife” as a relic of group marriage, the author comes to the topic of kinship, or rather fictitious kinship. Its consideration allows us to conclude that the practice of exchanging women and sexual intimacy created a social closeness, compared by the Chukchis themselves with kinship. The article is Accompanied by comments by L. N. Khakhovskaya, S. A. Arutyunov And E. P. Batyanova.
