Abstract
The article contains a response to comments by S. B. Adonieva, Z. S. Antipina and K. E. Shumov, M. L. Butovskaya, D. V. Gromov, and T. B. Shchepanskaia. Drawn on the authors' own field research in the Kostroma region of Russia and a variety of other sources, the article discusses the practice of reusing things and waste, also known as upcycling, in decorating home space, backyards, gardens, and children's playgrounds. The authors think about the role that the practice plays in the cultural innovation that unfolds as part of globalization, as well as about its relationship and connection to the notions of “fashion”, “custom”, and “tradition”.
