The article considers the current state of U.S. – Turkish relations by early 2018. The article gives an overview of the importance of Turkey for the U.S. strategy in the region, analyzes the main contradictions in Washington–Ankara relations under President B. Obama, and identifies the features of U.S. diplomacy towards Turkey in the first year presidency of D. Trump. The chronological scope of the study is limited to 2016–2018, which is due to the emphasis on the analysis of the current disagreements between the U.S. and Turkey in connection with the latest developments in the Republic of Turkey and the changing situation in the civil war in Syria. In the author's opinion, although some of the goals of the U.S. and Turkey are complementary, others contradict each other. The article attempts to justify the assumption that the probability of overcoming U.S. – Turkish disagreements under President D. Trump, while maintaining the positions taken by both sides today, remains low.
