Abstract
Official statistical data on researchers working in various types of academic institutions in Russia during the period 1995-2010 reveals trends in the changing structure and dynamics of research cadres, their level of expertise, and the numbers of auxiliary personnel. The results of the investigation demonstrate that the Russian Academy of Sciences remains the country's most efficient research institution, in comparison with other existing academic organizations, and that its liquidation would seriously undermine the national research potential.
