The article focuses on the phenomenon of seasonal labor migrations in Dagestan and discusses its place in, and the importance for, the present day Dagestan community. The author argues that the social practice, which has tangible historical roots in the region, is instrumental in shaping the social outlook of this community. The author analyzes various ways in which the practice helps to resolve social contradictions, such as those related to the crossing of borders of social hierarchies in Dagestan's rural community, or to the effects of the conspicuous consumption strategy which is popular in the region.
