Целью статьи является реконструкция праафразийской терминологии для обозначения оружия и вооруженных конфликтов, в том числе освещение проблемы войны в древнейшей истории с лингвистической точки зрения, обычно игнорируемой археологами и историками первобытности при обсуждении этой проблемы. Праязыки ранних афразийцев и их ближайших потомков – североафразийцев (говоривших на прасемито-египетско-берберо-чадском языке), которых автор отождествляет с создателями натуфийской и постнатуфийской археологических культур Леванта, распадались, по его глоттохронологическим подсчетам по методу М. Свадеша, существенно усовершенствованному С.А. Старостиным, в XI–X тыс. до н.э. В статье приводятся детальные этимологии реконструированных праафразийских терминов: 12, обозначающих оружие (от палицы до щита), и 13 – разные виды вооруженных конфликтов; некоторые из них указывают на либо уже сформировавшееся, либо формирующееся значение “война” в праафразийском языке, а значит, в сознании говорящего на нем сообщества.

Статья представляет собой ответы автора на отклики трех коллег, критически прокомментировавших его статью “Лексическая реконструкция для реконструкции предыстории: праафразийские термины, относящиеся к оружию, войне и другим вооруженным конфликтам”. Эти ответы касаются проблем генетической классификации, глоттохронологии и прародины афразийской языковой макросемьи (ответы А.Г. Козинцеву), фонетических и семантических критериев лексического сравнения при реконструкции праязыковых культурных терминов, их репрезентативности в разных ветвях языковой семьи и различения исконной лексики от заимствованной и затрагивают соотношение качества праафразийской и праиндоевропейской реконструкций (ответы Г.С. Старостину и А.В. Дыбо).

Lexical Reconstruction to Reconstruct Prehistory: The Proto-Afrasian Terms for Weapons, War, and Other Armed Conflicts

The article aims to reconstruct the Proto-Afrasian terminology of weapons and armed conflicts, including illuminating the problem of war in prehistory from a linguistic point of view, usually ignored by archaeologists and prehistorians when discussing this problem. The proto-language of the early Afrasians and their immediate descendants, the North Afrasians (who spoke the Proto-Semitic-Egyptian-Berber-Chadic language), whom the author identifies with the creators of the Natufian and post-Natufian archaeological cultures of the Levant, started branching, according to his glottochronological calculations, by the method of M. Swadesh, significantly improved by Sergei Starostin, in the 11th-10th mill. BCE. The article provides detailed etymologies of 12 reconstructed Proto-Afrasian terms for weapons (from mace to shield) and 13 terms denoting different types of armed conflicts; several of these indicate either an already established or an emerging meaning of “war” in the Proto-Afrasian language, and thus in the minds of its speaker community.

The article is the author’s appreciative response to three colleagues who commented critically on the lead article (“Lexical Reconstruction for the Reconstruction of Prehistory: Proto-Afrasian Terms Related to Weaponry, Warfare and Other Armed Conflicts”). It focuses on problems of genetic classification, glottochronology, and ancestral home of the Afrasian (Afro-Asiatic) language macrofamily (response to A. M. Kozintsev); phonetic and semantic criteria of lexical comparison in the reconstruction of proto-language cultural terms, their representativeness in different branches of the language family and the distinction of the original vocabulary from the borrowed. It also touches upon the comparative quality of Afrasian and Indo-European reconstruction considering the large numbers of scholars working in the general area of Indo-European studies versus a few active specialists in the field of comparative historical Afrasian studies (responses to G. S. Starostin and A. V. Dybo).
